Canada: The province of Manitoba repeals the bedding and other upholstered or stuffed articles regulation 78/2004

February 2019 - Relevant for: Hardlines, softlines, toys and children's products

On 24 January 2019, the Provincial Government of Manitoba in Canada announced the repeal of1 the Bedding and Other Upholstered or Stuffed Articles Regulation 78/2004.2

This repeal will become effective from 1 January 2020 and it will eliminate the burden of registration and labelling requirements from the manufacturers, renovators, and home hobby/craft operators of bedding and other upholstered or stuffed articles intended to be sold in Manitoba.

However, the Consumer Protection Office will continue to administer the current rules related to bedding and other upholstered or stuffed articles until the repeal takes effect on January 1, 2020.

With this context it is reminded that in December 2018, the Province of Ontario also revoked similar requirements (The Upholstered and Stuffed Articles Regulation) which will become effective from 1 July 2019.3

These repeals do not affect the provincial requirements of Quebec, therefore the upholstered and stuffed articles intended to be sold in the province of Quebec shall be compliant with that provinces’ laws.
