TÜV SÜD Teams up with CHEARI to Issue First Certification of Smart Home Appliance Cybersecurity to Microwave Oven Manufactured by Midea

TÜV SÜD recently attended the 7th China Smart Home Summit Forum at invitation and delivered a keynote speech titled "International Standards and Requirements for Smart Home Cybersecurity”. At the forum, it teamed up with CHEARI (Beijing) Certification & Testing Co., Ltd. (CHEARI) to issue the first certification of smart home appliance cybersecurity to a microwave oven (Model: TG925H3MW-SSCERD) manufactured by Guangdong Midea Kitchen Appliances Manufacturing Co., Ltd. (Midea). This marked that the microwave oven meets the T/CAS 499 enhancement level requirements in terms of safety functions and safety assurance, including cybersecurity, which helps to enhance consumer confidence in the cybersecurity of smart home appliances.

While bringing consumers convenience and comfort, smart home appliances face many cybersecurity challenges. In response, China group standard T/CAS 499-2021 Network security requirements and test methods for intelligent household appliance proposes targeted cybersecurity technologies and test evaluation methods. It stipulates technical requirements for the basic cybersecurity assurance level against basic cybersecurity attacks and the enhancement level against medium attacks.

Following this standard, TÜV SÜD joined forces with CHEARI to conduct a comprehensive assessment on Midea’s microwave oven (Model: TG925H3MW-SSCERD) in terms of safety functions and safety assurance. The tests confirmed this product reach the enhancement level requirements of the T/CAS 499 standard and obtained the TÜV SÜD certification of smart home appliance cybersecurity compliance and CHEARI certification of smart home appliance cybersecurity.

At the forum, Mr. Stone Zhong, Outstanding Engineer of Electronic and Electrical Innovation R&D Department, TÜV SÜD Greater China, delivered a keynote speech on “International Standards and Requirements for Smart Home Cybersecurity”. Zhong said, a comfortable, safe and efficient smart home is an emerging need of consumers, which has triggered hot spots in the industry. However, cybersecurity is one of the restrictions for widespread application of IoT services. It also receives increasing attention from consumers. 

The US, EU, the UK, Brazil and Singapore are among the countries that have enacted and updated mandatory cybersecurity and data protection laws; meanwhile, some other countries such as Finland and Singapore have launched cybersecurity labeling programs. Improving product cybersecurity to meet regulatory requirements has become an urgent problem for enterprises.
