TÜV SÜD Hong Kong Organizes Beach Cleanup to Implement Sustainable Development Goals

To implement the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations, TÜV SÜD Hong Kong recently organized a beach cleanup activity. The activity was meant to call on more colleagues of TÜV SÜD Greater China and other individuals or organizations to join the efforts to protect the marine environment and to promote the sustainable development of oceans.

Oceans provide a variety of products for human beings. However, up to 40% of the world’s oceans have been heavily polluted by human activities with the development of economy and society. The UN set 10 basic goals in the Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030. The goal for marine environment is to prevent and significantly reduce all types of marine pollution by 2025, including marine debris. Achieving these goals requires not only long-term government commitment and financial support, but also the efforts of every individual.

To practice “protecting and utilizing marine resources for sustainable development”, TÜV SÜD organized this beach cleanup activity themed “Protect life below water from plastic threat”. Colleagues from TÜV SÜD canoed to the beach from the opposite training camp located in Sai Kung, Hong Kong, and cleaned up and classified wastes in the ocean and on the beach. Mr. Andrew Lee, CFO of TÜV SÜD North Asia, took part in the activity. He said, “TÜV SÜD has always been a practitioner of sustainable development. We are very supportive of environmental protection and hope such activities will be held within TÜV SÜD’s other branches in Greater China.”

Sustainability is one of the four strategic objectives of TÜV SÜD. In addition to oceans, TÜV SÜD has always been committed to achieving sustainable development in other areas, especially those where new technological progress or new requirements arise. Its management system certification helps businesses and organizations comply with laws, regulations and standards, optimize processes, and continuously improve performance. Gaining the ISO 50001 energy management system certification under the support of TÜV SÜD means the companies or organizations have not only reduced energy consumption, but also achieved several sustainable development goals, i.e., Clause 7 (Affordable Clean Energy), Clause 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), Clause12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) and Clause13 (Climate Action).
