TÜV SÜD gives training on ISO 14067: quantification and reporting of the carbon footprint of a product to help companies reduce carbon emissions

On Nov. 1-3, 2021, TÜV SÜD launched a special training on ISO 14067:2018 in Shanghai, focusing on requirements and guidelines for quantification of the carbon footprint of a product. Energy management personnel from well-known Chinese auto parts suppliers, refrigeration equipment companies and quality inspection institutes participated in the training. By doing so, TÜV SÜD aims to help companies effectively identify opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the product life cycle and formulate targeted carbon emission reduction plans and carbon removal actions, so that they can meet the needs of the government, their customers or other related parties for product carbon information, demonstrate their environmental and social responsibilities, and prepare themselves for transformation to green and low-carbon development.

TÜV SÜD’s expert delivered the training

In recent years, due to global concern for climate changes, greenhouse gas emissions have become the focus of public attention. Governments, enterprises and organizations all over the world are faced with the need to reduce carbon emissions. China has announced that it will strive to hit peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The emission and removal of greenhouse gases occur at all stages of the product life cycle, including raw material acquisition, transportation, storage, design, production, product use and final disposal. Therefore, quantifying emission and removal at each stage serves to identify key links and thus formulate targeted action plans.

As part of the ISO 14060 standards, the ISO 14067:2018 was officially released in Aug. 2018. It specifies the principles, requirements and guidelines for quantifying product carbon footprint based on the product life cycle, and is used to quantify, monitor, report and verify or check greenhouse gas emissions and reductions. Its application ensures the transparency, consistency and credibility of quantification of product carbon footprint, and helps companies achieve low carbon sustainable development.

In this three-day training, TÜV SÜD’s expert Mr. Xu started from overview and significance of product carbon footprint, and explained the relevance between the ISO 14067:2018 and other international standards, such as the ISO 14044:2006 — requirements and guidelines for life cycle assessment and the ISO 14027:2017 — development of product category rules. He then conducted in-depth analyses of quantitative principles, research goals, research scope, life cycle inventory, research reports, verification procedures and methods on product carbon footprint. Related cases were shared and simulation exercises were done to stimulate participants’ enthusiasm for learning and deepen their understanding and application of  the ISO 14067:2018. Regarding its future implementation, TÜV SÜD expects companies to incorporate the impacts of greenhouse gas emissions throughout the life cycle into their emission reduction decisions and integrate product carbon information into product design and development to produce more low-carbon products.

Group discussions during the training

As an authoritative and independent third-party testing and certification body, TÜV SÜD enjoys a good reputation in certification of greenhouse gas control, energy conservation and emission reduction. It provides the latest technical services in international greenhouse gas management, energy management, auditing, etc. In particular, the company focuses on international standard training and personal ability improvement in various fields. In addition to the ISO 14067:2018, it also provides training on the ISO 14064:2018 — specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals, the PAS 2060:2014 — specification for the demonstration of carbon neutrality and the like, with a view to help companies improve the skills of employees and enhance their competitiveness for sustainable development.
