PPE sold in EU should comply with the Regulation (EU) 2016/425. For safety shoes, which are generally defined as Cat II Products, the manufacturer should go through the EU-Type examination, and obtain Certificates issued by Notified Bodies. EN ISO 20345 is the harmonized standard of safety shoes to estimate whether the product provide adequate protection for the risk which is intended to protect against.

This standard specifies basic and additional (optional) requirements for safety footwear used for general purpose. It includes, for example, mechanical risks, slip resistance, thermal risks, ergonomic behaviour. It also specifies requirements for safety footwear equipped with customized insocks, customized safety footwear or individual manufactured customized safety footwear.


New in 2022 version

EN ISO 20345 has been updated to 2022 version on Sep 30th 2022.
The European Commission has published an IMPLEMENTING DECISION (EU) 2023/941 (OJ L 125/37, 11.5.2023) on 2 May 2023. Now the new version of EN ISO 20345 has been harmonized Standard which provides the presumption of conformity to EHSRs of (EU) 2016/425. The manufacturer in light of the state of the art should comply with the new version after May 11th 2023. There is a transition period until November 11, 2024, during which the old version will no longer provide a presumption of conformity with Regulation (EU) 2016/425 EHSRs. The new version has many changes, the changes on Marking categories and slip resistance are remarkable:

In EN ISO 20345:2011, the marking of slip resistance is SRA, SRB or SRC, one of the requirements should be complied.
