TÜV SÜD explains changes to DIN ISO 45001

DIN ISO/FDIS 45001 was published in November. Up to the end of January 2018, occupational health and safety (OH&S) experts had the possibility to submit changes to the revision of OH&S management systems and vote on the draft of the standard. That period has now expired. The draft standard received the necessary approval and the development of the standard is now entering its final phase. Publication of the standard is expected in March 2018.

The success of a company significantly depends on the people working in and for it. In this context, their health and physical wellbeing is the number one priority. Every day people are injured, fall ill or even die at work. For this reason, the BS OHSAS 18001 standard from 2007, which has been in use to date, will be improved and replaced by the new standard. ISO 45001 describes the requirements for occupational health and safety management systems and gives guidance for implementation.

The new standard is designed to significantly reduce the risk of injuries, accidents and work-related diseases in companies. To achieve this, companies need to implement suitable methods and instruments. “The standard is aimed at protecting not only a company's employees, but also other people working within the company's sphere of responsibility. They too will be included in occupational health and safety in the future“, says Andreas Engelhardt, Product Manager Occupational Health and Safety Certification at TÜV SÜD.

The first step in planning an occupational health and safety management system is to conduct an assessment of specific risks to the health and safety of the individuals at work. The organisation must eliminate, or at least reduce, these risks by taking suitable action. However, circumstances change frequently. Given this, risk assessment and evaluation must be repeated regularly to ensure a healthy work environment, and further actions must be drawn up on that basis and implemented to reduce risks and exposures.
