Certification mark for toys

Scope:

The certification mark applies to the electrical, mechanical and chemical safety of toys. The term “toys” applies to all products designed or intended, whether exclusively or not, for use in play by children under 14 years of age.

Basis of certification:

The test standard developed by TÜV SÜD includes the requirements of the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC and the EN 71 standard. Testing of electrical and electronic toys is based, for example, on the EMC (electromagnetic compatibility) Directive, the RoHS (Restriction of certain Hazardous Substances) Directive and the R&TTE (Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment) Directive

Key words of the certification mark:

  • Tested toy
The statement “Tested toy” covers the tests carried out on the product. Their exact scope follows from the additional features included in this statement. However, in any case the obligatory tests must be proved in addition and factory inspection carried out prior to certification.
  • Safety tested
The voluntary certification mark with the statement "Safety tested" is issued for products, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.

In the case of toys, the scope of testing and certification depends on the type of product. Both mechanical, electrical or electromagnetic requirements may be applicable. Compliance with these requirements will be tested in full.

Certification is based on product-specific standards and test programmes. These standards and test programmes are identified on the certificate in question.
  • Toxic tested
For the statement “Toxic tested”, TÜV SÜD tested the product for hazardous substances and verified that any harmful substances present in the product complied with or remained under the relevant limits. The test is based on legal requirements, with TÜV SÜD defining even stricter criteria in some cases.
