Certification mark for Ecodesign

Scope:

The certification mark applies to energy-related products. To function as intended, energy-related products are dependent on energy input in the form of electricity, fossil fuels or energy from renewable sources. Examples include household appliances and office equipment, heating and lighting systems. Also included in the scope are products that are dependent on energy input and intended to be incorporated into a product by end-users. Excluded are means for transporting people and goods.

Basis of certification:

The certification mark is based on the Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC, which is designed to establish a framework for defining requirements related to the eco-design of energy-related products.

In addition, the certification mark is also based on Directive 2010/30/EU, which specifies the requirements for indication, by means of labelling and standard product information, of the consumption of energy and other resources by energy-related products. Energy labelling provides information on energy efficiency during use, and thus aids in making purchase decisions.

Depending on the products to be tested, the following further Directives may apply: EC 1275/2008, EC 107/2009, EC 244/2009, EC 245/2009, EC 278/2009, EC 642/2009, EC 643/2009, EC 1015/2010, EC 1016/2010, EU 206/2012, EU 932/2012, EU 1194/2012, EU 617/2013, EU 666/2013, EU 801/2013, EU  66/2014, EU 2015/1185, EU 2015/1188, EU 2015/1095, EC 640/2009, EC 641/2009, EC 327/2011, EU 206/2012, EU 547/2012, EU 813/2013, EU 814/2013, EU 548/2014, EU1253/2014, EU 2015/1189.

  • Ecodesign
The TÜV SÜD certification mark with the statement “Ecodesign” is awarded to products where environmental aspects are considered in product design. Improved product design reduces the environmental burden across the product's lifecycle (manufacture, operation and disposal) and saves energy and other resources.
  • ErP
ErP is short for “energy-related product” (see scope). Given this, the scope also covers energy-using products (EuP). The experts test the certified product for its compliance with the general and specific ecodesign requirements.
  • Safety tested

The voluntary certification mark with the statement “Safety tested” is issued for products, indicating that the product was tested and certified by the independent third-party organisation of TÜV SÜD Product Service for conformity with the essential technical safety requirements.

  • Production monitored
Periodic surveillance of the manufacture of a product constitutes the basic premise for certification which includes the award of a certification mark. Certification always requires product testing and regular factory inspections.

As a third-party expert organisation, TÜV SÜD verifies that the manufacturer is able to maintain consistent quality in line with the requirements throughout high-volume production and has established the necessary quality system, including incoming goods inspections, lists of materials and final product check.

In addition, calibration of the necessary measuring and monitoring equipment must be ensured. Surveillance and/or monitoring covers the testing of safety-critical components and other materials used. If unauthorised changes are made to the product, the certificate will be withdrawn and the TÜV SÜD certification mark may no longer be used.
